Vega de San Mateo is an inland village of the island of Gran Canaria. It is 800 meters above sea level and 60 km away from our hotels, that is just about 50 minutes’ drive.
In San Mateo you will enjoy the amazing scenery and views from its viewpoints. It is the ideal place if you are looking for contact with nature and breathing fresh air. Nearby there are also several hiking trails that provide an insight into the vegetation of the area. Some of these routes pass close to religious temples that are worth visiting, i.e. Church of San Mateo, La Cueva Ermita - Cave Chapel - and other parishes.
However, this town is well-known for its agricultural and livestock activities, and so, you may as well enjoy some locally made dishes such as broiler sausages, pig’s meat, cured or tender cheese, etc. in the local restaurants. In addition, grapes are grown in San Mateo and five of the major wineries of the island are there, so what a better excuse for trying some wines from Gran Canaria?
Every Sunday, there is a popular Craft and Farmers’ Market where visitors can buy their fruits, veggies, cheese, honey, etc. and some wood and basketry pieces all made according to the traditional craft techniques.
September 21st is a key date in San Mateo when the local festivity, the pilgrimage and the offering with floats are held. That day you can enjoy different activities from Canarian music’concerts to the cattle fair where the best animals are rewarded.
Vega de San Mateo is definitely a place you should visit when you come to the island of Gran Canaria. It is the perfect place to taste the local products and rediscover the charm of nature.
