StartGran CanariaSan Francisco, Telde

We have already spoken about some other charming neighbourhoods and towns which you can visit during your stay at Dunas Hotels & Resorts on the island of Gran Canaria.

Telde, the second largest city of Gran Canaria, has many districts and places of beauty and cultural interest. Telde is the oldest city and at a point in history was the first capital of the island. It is located to the east of Gran Canaria, about 20 minutes from Dunas Hotels & Resorts and its population, today, exceeds one hundred thousand inhabitants.

Let’s go to one of the most surprising neighbourhoods of Telde, San Francisco: not only for its natural charm but also for its rich history and the peace that one can breathe in this place.

San Francisco is next to the neighbourhood of San Juan, one of the most important districts of Telde. It is a neighbourhood of narrow streets and great silence. If we take a walk around, we’ll turn back the clock many centuries. It is one of the neighbourhoods where the Castilians settled after conquering Gran Canaria; so this always made it the home of wealthy families who came to the island and wanted to live further south from the Peninsula.

It is not a touristic place, probably you have never heard about it before, nevertheless, if you include it in your route, you will not regret it.

Its interesting streets of beautiful houses lead us to the past. Its square is the core of the neighbourhood and where its roads begin. Visually is a typical Canarian town which exhales history in every corner.

It is a magical district, full of legends and countless striking corners. It is one of the most beautiful and outstanding old towns in Gran Canaria.

It is a very special place to visit late afternoon, as the sunset will offer you perfect postcard moments for your memories. Its fascinating corners wrapped up in the soft light of the evening sun will give you a superbly unforgettable experience.
Don’t miss strolling along to discover:

The great Laurel of the Indies, a giant Laurel tree of an intense green in Calle de la Fuente. This is the natural landmark junction from where the main streets of San Francisco begin its course.

La Plaza de los Romeros, located behind the Franciscan Convent of Santa María de la Antigua. Have a look at the Bridge of the Seven Eyes crossing the ravine’s riverbed.

The House of Sall, longstanding typical Canarian house with an orchard and indoor patio; nowadays is a tourist interpretation centre.

The house of Julian Torón, the famous poet’s pure Canarian style home on the corner of the street named after him.

As we have mentioned above, don’t miss the sunset charming this very special neighbourhood. Why not staying at the Dunas Hotel & Resorts’ pools during the day and put the finishing touch in the magic of San Francisco?

San Francisco is also known as Santa María La Antigua. This is one of the oldest districts in The Canary Islands made up of narrow streets, small houses with two-tier roofing, wooden doors and windows (some green others purple); cobbled streets that fill the neighbourhood with enchantment, peace, simplicity and harmony. This historical and artistic corner still preserves its traditional architecture.

All its streets are remarkable, with striking details such as the “monteras” that formerly served to help riders mounting their horses.

If you are with us at Dunas Hotels & Resorts, or you are planning to come soon, we suggest you spend an afternoon in Telde. A stroll through San Juan neighbourhood and then go to enjoy the singular beauty of San Francisco.

If you are interested in knowing the history of the island, go to Vegueta, the old town of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and San Francisco in Telde; this way you can get to know more about the history of the island, as well as enjoying a great experience!
