The Necropolis of Arteara

During your stay in Gran Canaria we recommend you not only to dip into the nature of the cliffs, but also to get to know a part of the aboriginal culture of the island rooted here.

The necropolis Arteara is an archeological find spot in the south of Gran Canaria. It stretches over an area of 2 km in length and 1 km in width. The whole area is covered by “malparís” (most recent lava flows), which formed thousands of tube like structures in this territory. The stones originate from the adjacent mountain, which is easily spotted on the visit.

Necropolis Arteara Gran Canaria

Situated next to the village of Arteara, the necropolis is part of the canyon of Fataga (San Bartolomé de Tirajana). It is characterized by the unique contrast between lava flows of this zone and the huge green palm grove at the margin of the canyon. Across from the necropolis an impressive mountain chain is situated at the foot of the canyon of Armurga.

Exactly at this mountain chain you can admire an extraordinary archeo-astronomical phenomenon while the equinox in spring and autumn (change of seasons). During this incident the sun rises exactly behind the point, where there is a subsidence in the mountain chain of Armurga, and illuminates the most famous gravesite of the necropolis – the “sepultura del rey” (kings gravesite).
