Thanks to its mild climate, Gran Canaria is a destination that can be enjoyed 365 days a year. From north to south, the island invites visitors to enjoy life, explore, and discover a wide variety of experiences.

However, Gran Canaria in June has a special charm. It marks the beginning of one of the island’s most festive and vibrant times of the year, when local traditions, outdoor activities, and cultural events come together.

That’s why we’ve selected five unforgettable experiences that rank among the best things to do in Gran Canaria in June.

1. San Juan Night (La noche de San Juan)

San Juan, the most magical night of the year, is celebrated on the summer solstice — a night full of symbolism in which fire and water take centre stage.

In 2026, the celebration will occur from Tuesday to Wednesday. As a result, it is expected to be considerably less crowded compared to years when San Juan coincides with a weekend.

To fully immerse yourself in this extraordinary event, it is highly recommended to visit the capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and specifically Playa de Las Canteras. Thousands of people gather around controlled bonfires and open-air concerts to celebrate together. At midnight, a traditional ritual involves swimming in the sea. This symbolic act is believed to purify and bring good luck for the rest of the year.

If you prefer to avoid the crowds and the journey to the capital, you can still enjoy a beautiful celebration in the southern part of the island, near our hotels in Maspalomas. At Playa del Inglés, many people gather to witness the fireworks reflected over the Atlantic Ocean.

2. Corpus Christi: Ephemeral Art at Your Feet

At the beginning of June, the island of Gran Canaria is filled with the enchanting scent of flowers and the refreshing sea breeze. Corpus Christi, a remarkable display of creativity, dedication, and craftsmanship, takes center stage in many towns across the island. Streets are adorned with intricate carpets that exist for only a few hours, making them truly special.

In Arucas, the carpets are primarily crafted from colored sawdust and salt, while in the historic district of Vegueta, flower petals and aromatic herbs take center stage.

We highly recommend not limiting yourself to merely admiring the finished artwork. If you visit Vegueta around 8:00 a.m., you’ll witness entire families and neighborhood groups working with unwavering dedication to complete their designs. The atmosphere before the procession is truly unique, allowing you to observe firsthand the precision, creativity, and collective effort that goes into this centuries-old tradition.

For the most up-to-date information on the dates and procession times, please visit the official tourism website of Gran Canaria.

3. Seasonal Hiking: When the Tajinaste Azul is in full bloom

If you love nature, June is your last opportunity to see the Tajinaste Azul (Echium callithyrsum), also known as Gran Canary Borage, in full bloom. This endemic plant is a striking symbol of the extraordinary biodiversity of the Canary Islands.

We highly recommend embarking on a hike that begins at Caldera de los Marteles, located in the central-eastern part of Gran Canaria. This impressive volcanic crater serves as the starting point for one of the most breathtaking hikes in the island. As you descend towards Tenteniguada (Valsequillo), the landscape transforms into a vibrant tapestry of vivid blue Tajinaste flowers. Thousands of bees and butterflies flit about, creating a mesmerizing natural spectacle that showcases the island’s remarkable biodiversity.

Please note that the weather in the mountains of Gran Canaria can change within a matter of minutes. While it may already feel quite hot along the coast in June, temperatures inland can be significantly cooler, and mist is not uncommon.

To ensure your safety on rocky and potentially damp trails, we always recommend bringing a light jacket and wearing hiking shoes with good grip.

4. June Weather: What is the “Panza de Burro”?

If you’re planning a holiday in Gran Canaria in June, it’s worth learning about a unique local weather phenomenon called the “Panza de Burro” (literally, “donkey’s belly”). This refers to a thick layer of low clouds formed by the trade winds, which frequently covers the northern part of the island and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. It acts as a natural air conditioner, keeping the temperatures in these areas pleasantly mild.

In contrast, the southern part of the island offers a distinct advantage. Areas like Maspalomas, Playa del Inglés, and Meloneras, where our family and all-inclusive hotels are situated, benefit from the island’s central mountain range acting as a natural shield against the clouds. Consequently, while the northern regions may experience overcast skies, the southern areas typically bask in bright sunshine and almost completely clear skies.

Our tip: For the most accurate weather forecast for Gran Canaria, we recommend relying on Spain’s national meteorological agency (AEMET). It provides the most reliable forecasts for the island’s diverse microclimates.

5. Gastronomy in June: The Flavours of the Island

A perfect holiday is also about great food. In June, farmers’ markets such as those in Vega de San Mateo and Teror offer seasonal produce that you won’t find during the winter months.

Embark your culinary adventure with the renowned Queso de Flor de Guía, a traditional cheese hailing from the highlands of Santa María de Guía de Gran Canaria and Gáldar. Crafted using rennet extracted from the thistle flower, this cheese stands as one of the island’s most distinctive delicacies. The ideal time to savor it at its peak is during June.

In the southern part of the island, the first tropical fruits of the season are waiting for you. In Mogán, you can savor juicy mangoes and the first plums of the year.

After discovering these authentic flavours of Gran Canaria, you can continue your culinary journey at Don Gregory by Dunas. Here, a Canarian-themed buffet features many of these fresh, locally sourced ingredients, turning your stay into a truly authentic gastronomic experience with a genuine local character.
