We imagine that if you have chosen Dunas Hotels & Resorts to spend your holidays in Gran Canaria it will mainly be for its great location in the south of the island. Even so, our experience says that many of those who come year after year, rent a car as soon as they can and travel around the island. Today, we’d like to propose a different route. A village with great tradition, Valsequillo, and a great meal in the Guajara Restaurant.
Valsequillo is located in the eastern centre part of Gran Canaria, 49 kilometres away from Maspalomas. This is in the Middle Mountain region of the island, since it is located on the five hundred meters above sea level.
The main festival of this town is the Almond Flower Festival, celebrated during the first week of February, when many people from Gran Canaria as well as tourists visit Valsequillo to join this historical tradition.
In its old town’s large pedestrian zone, we’ll discover several points of interest. The El Colmenar cavalry barracks, one of the historical sites of Valsequillo. The Church of San Miguel, with some characteristic sculptures of the area which add great cultural interest (i.e. San Miguel el Chico or the Crucified Christ, both made by the canary sculptor Luján Pérez).
Another of the great attractions of this town is its natural setting. Its beauty is impressive, and it has landscapes that you wouldn’t imagine seeing when you arrive in the area. Its ravine has a great ecological value, with the best acebuchal (wild olive groves) of Gran Canaria. An interesting fact is that its channel has water running throughout the year.
For those who visit Gran Canaria for trekking purposes, Valsequillo is a must place to go to; it offers many activities and great trails that can be hiked from one side to the other.
In addition to all the above, Valsequillo has about ten viewpoints, located in different points of the municipality and arranged in a way that you can enjoy all its natural and historical landscapes. Along the walk through Valsequillo you’ll be able to enjoy great views at El Helechal Oeste, El Fregenal, La Caldera de Los Marteles (one of the best well-known and most prominent on the island), El Mirador del Valle de San Roque, etc.
If your purpose visiting the island is not playing sports but to rest and get to know Gran Canaria, we still suggest you go to visit to this wonderful town. After touring part of its nature and visiting the old town, you can have lunch at the Guajara Restaurant. It is a family business that has been managed from generation to generation. It is an interesting place with one of the most recommended high quality at good price fresh grilled meat on the island. Everyone who visits this restaurant recommends it to their friends and acquaintances, as it is a special place with great client service and excellent food.
In short, we dearly suggest a walk through the town of Valsequillo and a meal in the Restaurant Guajara. Isn’t it a great plan for any Sunday with friends or family?!
