These places are the best to practice SUP in Gran Canaria.

Do you want to go paddle surfing on Gran Canaria? Grab your board and your paddle and let the journey begin! You'll discover places that very few people get to. And you’ll exercise all your muscles, while having fun with your friends, partner or family.

Everyone can practice Stand Up Paddle (SUP) in Gran Canaria. The south and the capital of the island have very quiet waters to practice this type of surfing. What do you think? Put your swimsuit on, stretch a little and discover the best places to do SUP on the island!

What is SUP?

Stand-up paddle surfing or SUP is a water sport born from surfing and with modern roots in Hawaii. Paddle surfers stand on boards that float over the water and use a paddle to propel themselves through the water.

The sport has evolved from being a variant of surfing to being practised as racing, touring, yoga and fishing. It’s a very attractive sport since it’s accessible to all, regardless of their ability.

The magnificent water conditions surrounding the island make Gran Canaria the ideal place to practice this fun sport. Some of the most popular places are the following:

1. Las Canteras

On the beach of Las Canteras there are days when the sea rests, when the tide is calm and the fish linger still at the bottom. These are the days when the surfers run out of waves.

But what do surfers in the capital do on days like this, when the sea is sleeping? The answer is Stand-Up Paddle, an ideal sport for calm sea days. Because in the end, it doesn't matter if it's high or low tide, February or August on Gran Canaria.

In Las Canteras there are thousands of options for sport and fun, which is what it's all about. And SUP is a different way of enjoying the sea. This sport has become popular on the island in recent years.

2. Anfi del Mar

If we had to describe Anfi del Mar in just a few words, we’d definitely say that it’s a beach where the calm sea is like a swimming pool. And what better place to do some paddle surfing in Gran Canaria?

This cosy beach is located in the south of Gran Canaria, in the municipality of Mogán. It’s a beach of fine white sand with calm waters. Here, it’s possible to SUP in a peaceful and quiet environment.

It’s also a beach that’s highly recommended for families travelling with children, as the little ones can have fun looking for seashells in the sand or feeling like pirates and shipwrecked sailors on the seashore.

3. Pasito Blanco

In the southwest of the island of Gran Canaria you can find a quiet beach perfect for relaxing in the sun. It’s Pasito Blanco, with calm waters and no waves as it’s protected by its marina on one side.

Its soft dark sand invites you to lie on your towel and sunbathe all day long, float for hours on a shore of crystal clear water or paddle through the ocean on your board.

This beach is close to Maspalomas, but it’s also peaceful since it’s not directly located in a tourist centre. There are also supermarkets, laundrettes and cafés in the surrounding area.

What to consider when paddle surfing in Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria has generous waves, but also powerful breakers. It’s essential that you’re aware of your physical condition and your level of surfing before getting into the water.

The beaches usually have lifeguard services. The lifeguards will be able to advise you, so don't hesitate to ask them whatever you need to know. But if there’s no lifeguard post in the area, you should keep the following in mind:

  • The strength and direction of the wind

  • The prevailing direction of the currents

  • The point of the tide and the time of day

  • The size of the waves

  • The entry and exit zone (which can vary due to the above factors)

It’s always advisable to SUP with a partner and to do sessions of a maximum of two hours to prevent fatigue and dehydration.
