Gran Canaria is an island with a constant spring climate, offering warm, sunny days all year round. However, to make the most of your trip, it’s important to choose the time of year that best suits your preferences and interests.

At Dunas Hotels & Resorts we’ll help you discover the best time of year to travel to Gran Canaria, according to your interests, favourite activities and budget.

What’s the weather like in Gran Canaria?

Gran Canaria enjoys a spring-like climate year-round, with some variations:

Spring (March-May): This is when the season starts, with mild temperatures ranging from 21°C to 24°C.  Rain is less frequent, and the trade winds bring a pleasant coolness. Nights can still be cool.

Summer (June-October):  This is the peak season. Expect sunshine, with average temperatures above 25°C. It can get quite hot, sometimes exceeding 30°C.  Rain is rare, and the sea is warm, perfect for swimming (water temperatures around 24°C).

Autumn (November-February):  This is considered the shoulder season.  Temperatures are still pleasant, ranging from 16°C to 23°C.  It's more likely to be cloudy with some rain, and the winds can be stronger. The sea stays warm (22°C to 24°C)  making it a great time for water sports.

Winter (December-February): This is the coolest time to visit Gran Canaria, but by no means cold.  Temperatures typically range from 15°C to 20°C. There can be occasional rain showers. The nights are a bit cooler, but it rarely drops below 10°C.

Best time to travel to Gran Canaria

If you're looking for a dream destination to spend your days off, Gran Canaria is your choice. With its spectacular weather, golden sandy beaches and a wealth of activities to enjoy, Gran Canaria is the ideal place to unwind and relax.

So what is the best time to visit the island? Let’s summarize the seasons.

Summer in Gran Canaria: sun and beach

The summer months on Gran Canaria mean holidays, sun, and beach. Summer is probably the most popular time of the year that many choose to visit Gran Canaria. Enjoy long, sunny days, perfect for enjoying the beaches and outdoor activities.

From June to August, temperatures range between 24°C and 29°C, making it the ideal time for sun and sea lovers.

Beaches such as Maspalomas, Playa del Inglés and Puerto Rico are full of life and offer a wide range of water sports such as surfing or entertainment such as traditional fiestas in the different villages of the island like the night of San Juan.

However, it’s important to bear in mind that summer is also the busiest season in Gran Canaria, so you may find the more touristy areas a little crowded.

To enjoy the summer in Gran Canaria, we recommend you to visit the most popular beaches in the south and north of the island. Summer is also perfect for natural pools

Autumn: peace and quiet

After putting the finishing touches to summer, we dive into a very special time: autumn. As it arrives, Gran Canaria becomes a little quieter, but no less enchanting.

From September to November, temperatures drop slightly, with highs hovering between 22 °C and 27 °C.

An ideal time to visit the island if you prefer to avoid the crowds and enjoy the milder weather. The beaches are less crowded, allowing you to relax and enjoy the natural surroundings in more peace and quiet.

It's also a good time to explore the island's mountainous interior and enjoy activities such as hiking in Gran Canaria or mountain biking.

Autumn in Gran Canaria is also the ideal time to enjoy Halloween, the Walking Festival, the Apple Festival, Frontón King (A world-class bodyboarding competition) and much more.

Winter: escape the cold

Unlike other parts of the world where winter brings cold and snow, Gran Canaria still enjoys a mild and pleasant climate. From December to February, temperatures rarely drop below 15 degrees Celsius. In the south of the island they range from 20-21 degrees Celsius, making the island a perfect retreat from the winter weather.

Although there may be some occasional rain, the days are still mostly sunny and perfect for enjoying outdoor activities such as golf, hiking, Gran Canaria Christmas events and visiting natural parks such as Roque Nublo or Tamadaba.

Winter is also a quieter season in terms of tourism, which means you can enjoy the island with less crowds.

Spring: nature in its purest form

One of the best times to visit Gran Canaria. As spring arrives in Gran Canaria, the island is transformed into a paradise of colours and aromas. From March to May, temperatures are mild and pleasant, with highs ranging from 20 °C to 25 °C.

This is the perfect time to explore the island's lush nature, with its botanical gardens, nature reserves and mountainous landscapes. Spring is also ideal for outdoor activities such as bird watching, cycling routes around Gran Canaria, kayaking or enjoying Easter Week in Gran Canaria.
