Worth a visit combined with a hiking route: discover the peaks of Gran Canaria.

On your arrival on the island you’ll be seduced by the traditional plans of sun and beach, tranquillity, relaxation and leisure, but there are undoubtedly other plans that you cannot leave aside on your visit, such as discovering the best mountains in Gran Canaria.

A spectacular island that hides an immense variety of natural landscapes. You can be surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and, in a matter of minutes, you can enjoy a natural environment where the mountains rise up, offering unparalleled beauty.

If you're looking for exciting adventures and scenic discovery while hiking, be sure to explore the sacred mountains of Gran Canaria (called the Montañas Sagradas of Gran Canaria).

Top 5 most popular mountains in Gran Canaria

In addition to your car, one of the best ways to discover the mountains is to do it through the wide variety of hiking routes that Gran Canaria has to offer.

Hiking is a great option to reach the highest peaks, discover their marvellous landscapes and, above all, the spectacular views that await our arrival.

Come and discover with Dunas Hotels & Resorts the 5 most popular mountains of Gran Canaria. Sacred, iconic mountains, and some that you probably didn't know about.

1. Peak of Las Nieves

We begin our route with the most popular mountain on the island, Pico de Las Nieves.

At an altitude of 1948 metres, it’s the peak of the island and, on arrival, you’ll be able to enjoy spectacular views of the entire southern basin, the north of the island, Roque Nublo and, weather permitting, a panoramic view of Mount Teide.

To get there, take the GC-4 towards Tafira Alta and then take the GC-15, Las Lagunetas and then the GC-600 until you reach the summit. From there, you can explore the surrounding area thanks to the small network of footpaths and hiking paths that skirt the Pico de Las Nieves.

2. Roque Nublo

If we continue our walk around the summit area, we’ll reach the icon of the island, the Roque Nublo

To get there, you have to take the GC-130 to Cruz de Los Llanos and take the GC-600 to the car park at the foot of Roque Nublo.

Once you get here, the way to the top is on foot. The route doesn’t have many technical difficulties and is practically uphill, so we recommend you wear comfortable shoes and clothes, water and food.

Throughout the route, you’ll be able to contemplate the pine forest and discover one of the best views of Gran Canaria, with the Teide in the background and the Roque Bentayga at your feet.

3. Cruz de Tejeda

Leaving behind the two most important natural monuments of Gran Canaria, we arrive at a charming enclave, the Cruz de Tejeda.

To get there, follow the GC-600 road until you reach the top of a place that is a must for hikers, cyclists and tourists on their way to Tejeda or the southern part of the island.

A place where you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Roque Bentayga and the best selection of gastronomy and culture of the islands.

4. Roque Bentayga

We take our vehicle again, and now we move to another natural monument of the highest point of the island, the Roque Bentayga.

Driving along the GC-60 to the municipality of Tejeda and then taking the secondary road GC-607, you’ll arrive at the foot of the mountain.

You can get to one point with your vehicle, but the way to the top can be done on foot. It should be noted that the route is of a medium-high level, with steep slopes and uneven terrain.

5. Risco Caído

We leave the representative icons of the island and arrive at a sacred mountain in Gran Canaria, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Risco Caído.

To reach it, we must take our vehicle and take the GC-2 towards Gáldar and, there, choose the GC-200 to Barranco Hondo.

Once you get there, you’ll discover the authentic historical and cultural heritage of Gran Canaria. An ancient settlement made up of 21 caves carved into the volcanic tuff at the top of a steep cliff that forms a ledge on the left bank of Barranco Hondo.
