Charning places: Barranco de las Vacas

Barranco de las Vacas, also known as Barranco de Barafonso or Tobas de Colores, is one of the most popular places in Gran Canaria. Its charm has made it a tourist attraction for residents and visitors to the island.

Gran Canaria has many incredible spots, including this emblematic desert spot hidden in the municipality of Agüimes, in the southwest of the island.

As you’ll see on your visit, it’s reminiscent of the famous Antelope Canyon in the United States. The Barranco de las Vacas was formed thanks to the force of the water that once accumulated in the ravine, leaving in its wake a landscape moulded at the whim of nature that’s well worth a visit.

In this article, you’ll learn all about the Barranco de las Vacas!

How to get to the Barranco de las Vacas Ravine

barranco las vacas

For those who want to visit this magical place, we recommend you to use Google Maps, which’ll show you the exact location by typing Barranco de las Vacas. Therefore, from any part of the island you’ll be able to find out how to get there, as well as the fact that the place is only 5 minutes away from the road.

Where to park near the ravine Las Vacas

Although the area is difficult to access as it’s on the side of the road, there’s a space for two cars before the road starts. However, in 100-200 metres or so further on, you’ll find enough space to leave the vehicles.

The disadvantage is that you’ll have to walk alongside the road and the verge is very small.

We advise you... Don't leave anything in sight in the car!

When is the best time to visit Barranco de las Vacas?

As it’s a somewhat isolated, small location (but not forgetting its increasing popularity), we recommend that you visit it during the week and in the early hours, to avoid the crowds of people in the area. Weekends tend to be crowded for certain excursions.

It isn’t necessary to wear professional footwear to visit the ravine, as the path isn’t very complicated, except for some sections where the earth is slippery.

Where to eat in the Barranco Las Vacas ravine

After a long day of hiking in the ravine and its surroundings, you need to recharge your batteries, and the best way to do this is to visit some restaurants in the area.

One of the options we offer you, just 15 minutes away, is the Restaurante el Centro, in the Barranco de Guayadeque. It’s a very famous place in the area that offers a variety of typical dishes such as papas arrugadas, gofio escaldado or fried cheese.

Another of the most popular restaurants in the area can be found in the municipality of Santa Lucía de Tirajana. Just 30 minutes from Barranco de las Vacas, we find the Alpendre de Félix.
