Join the most important fiesta in the south of Gran Canaria.
Maspalomas Carnival is an extraordinary opportunity to discover one of the most important events in the world. You might think that this is an exaggeration, but far from it! The municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana located in Gran Canaria holds spectacular festivities that attract thousands of visitors each year.
Although several of these festivities are held at the beginning of the year, the International Carnival of Maspalomas is one of the most important at an international level thanks, to a large extent, to the large number of visitors who come to the island motivated by the fun and uniqueness of this festival.
One of the main attractions of this carnival is the climate in the south of Gran Canaria in the month of March, where you can enjoy a very warm temperature of around 22º C on average, when in Europe it’s almost the beginning of winter. So if you feel like experiencing summer temperatures, a colourful, fun and unique party, we recommend you to visit the Maspalomas Carnival.
Another of the most famous attractions of this festival is its diversity, multiculturalism and integrity. These are three of the many qualities that have made it a benchmark festival in the panorama of tolerance.
The town where the carnival is held is one of the best tourist destinations on the island. Here you’ll find one of the most beautiful nature reserves in Spain: the Maspalomas Dunes. This beautiful sea of golden sand looks like something out of the most iconic deserts of Africa.
What's more, you have an impressive range of hotels to choose from, allowing you to choose the one that best suits the conditions of your trip. If you’re travelling to Gran Canaria with friends, you have impressive options such as Maspalomas Resort by Dunas and Suites & Villas by Dunas, two hotels that’ll make you feel like you’re staying in a village in the middle of a paradise, thanks to how close they are to Maspalomas Beach.
Their impressive rooms are equipped with all the necessary accessories so that you can enjoy complete autonomy and privacy during your holidays. Its leafy and well-kept gardens will give you the peace and quiet you need, together with some wonderful walks that lead to the relaxing and refreshing swimming pool areas.
Another excellent option is Mirador Maspalomas by Dunas, an all-inclusive hotel that is, without a doubt, one of the most dynamic in the south of Gran Canaria. You won't have to worry about anything at all, as in this accommodation you’ll be able to enjoy excellent and fun services that’ll allow you to disconnect and continue the wonderful sensations that the Maspalomas Carnival will leave you with.
What's so special about Maspalomas Carnival?
Normally, this carnival takes place during the month of March. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic in 2022, it’ll be held exceptionally from the 9th to the 19th of June.
The Carnival of Maspalomas will be a colourful and costumed event in the most touristic area of the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana during those 10 days. This year this festivity will have the theme of "magic". The aim is to create a festive atmosphere so that both visitors and residents can feel like real magicians.
The festival features numerous events that may vary from one year to the next. The Gran Cabalgata, which runs through the streets of Playa del Inglés and ends at the emblematic Yumbo Shopping Centre, is the most important and multitudinous event of the whole programme.
Another essential event in this carnival is the Drag Queen Gala, which has a great line-up with some of the best "drags" of the island, something that gives great notoriety and prestige to the gala.
The drag queens are drag artists who perform unique shows with choreography, music and interpretations that get the audience off their seats, not only because of the beauty of the show, but also because of the difficulty involved in performing the movements and wearing the themed costumes, which are, to say the least, eye-catching.
Also, one of the traditional events that always attracts a large audience are the mogollones. These are parties with live music made for dancing and having fun all night long. They’re held in the lower area of the Yumbo Shopping Centre.
As you can see, this is a different carnival of short duration that has a component that makes it different: it takes place in Maspalomas. If you come to Gran Canaria during the month of June you can enjoy 10 days of partying, fancy dress and lots of fun.
In short, the Maspalomas Carnival is an excellent way to discover another type of traditional festivity on the island, which has undoubtedly become one of the main attractions for travelling to Gran Canaria during the first months of the year.
