Feb. 9, 2019, 2:52 p.m.

Maspalomas Carnival… No one really knows who introduced Carnival to Maspalomas. Indeed, no one is completely sure whose idea it was. But it was crystal clear that the fine weather in southern Gran Canaria and Carnival festivities were meant for each other. That’s one of the reasons why we are going to show you all the things you have to know about this amazing celebration.

Of course, sceptics will wonder if the island of Gran Canaria is the only place where Carnival is celebrated right on the beach. Obviously, the answer is no, but it is probably hard to find a spot where the fine weather and the craziest festivity get along so well. Certainly, the south of Gran Canaria must be one of the spots with the best weather in all of the world.

As if it were tailored. A cold-free region where to travel any time of the year. As if someone would have decided to include on the map a small fine weather paradise. To top it off, it happens that in March, when you have decided that you’ve had your share of cold, quickly you notice that Carnival has followed you to the beach. But…

What's so special about the Maspalomas Carnival?

maspalomas carnival

You get the idea right from the very first day of your vacation, when you bump into lots of situations with no explanation outside the extraordinary and extravagant Carnival season. A carnivalesque March full of fine weather to enjoy the best shows like the next ones.

Carnival Queen Gala

One of the highlights of this festivity is the gala night when a new Carnival Queen is crowned. In this special election, candidates parade in stunning costumes that have taken a whole year to make and can weigh hundreds of kilos and are made of feathers and rhinestones. A true spectacle of shine and colour.

Drag Queen Gala

Perhaps, one of the most deeply-rooted celebration and most high-profile event is the night where a new Drag Queen is chosen in an an outstanding show. There are so many candidates entering the competition, that every year a qualifying stage is held in order to decide which drag queens will take part in the final. An exciting night on the stage with live entertainment on the big “platforms” night. It is Carnival in its purest state. Audacity, gender transgression and a total lack of inhibition are combined on the stage in a display of new expressions.

Carnival Parade

Maspalomas Carnival is an explosion of fun, music and colour. Dance troupes and outdoor parties fill the air with the joyous atmosphere of a Carnival with a long history. It is a gigantic multi-colored serpentine pageant, made up by thousands of masks and tens of musical ensembles, marching for hours along the main streets of the city to show the public watching on the sidewalks the ingenuity outburst becoming joy. Choose any costume you want and don't worry about the cold, as the warm nights mean you'll be able to wear it.

Burial of the Sardine

Carnival ends reluctantly with a flourish and picturesque final in a joyous funeral procession where Carnival-goers dressed as widows and mourners bid a fond farewell to a giant sardine (also known as Mr. Carnal) that is paraded through the streets and then burned along with a fireworks display. Carnival is over but only until next year.

The day Carnival met Maspalomas it did not think twice. There it would stay. It saw the long field of dunes by the ocean. The sea reaching everywhere. Music zigzagging along the streets. As most of the events are held at night, you can visit the amazing places and spots on the island during the day.
