StartGran CanariaCathedral of Arucas

The town of Arucas is located in the north of Gran Canaria, at the foothills of Mountain Arucas. Apart from being a very charming place, the town centre is of historical, architecture, and artistic value and so it always attracts many visitors to this area.

When you come on holiday to Gran Canaria, apart from having the good rest you need and enjoying the sun, the beaches and our great leisure offer, visiting Arucas will be a superb plan whether you have come with the family or as a couple. Its old town is a sample of history, and every corner has a story to tell. The municipality lives almost exclusively from farming and so its plantations are also an identity sign of this magical place.

Due to its church’s heritage, Arucas is one of the most visited towns of Gran Canaria. The Parish Church of San Juan Bautista is located in Plaza de la Constitución, next to the Town Hall and the local Market.

Although it is not a cathedral, neither by its functions nor by its construction, everybody knows it as the Cathedral of Arucas because of its stunning presence. It is one of the most emblematic buildings of the island of Gran Canaria, and one of the highest of the whole archipelago (it boasts a sixty meters high tower). Its majestic lava-stone façade is one of the very few neo-gothic buildings in the Canary Islands; a jewel of Cultural Interest, in the category of Monument.

The Parish Church of San Juan Bautista, or Cathedral of Arucas, is a Catholic temple that started being rebuilt in 1909, and was finished seventy years later. Its magnificent wealth, architecturally speaking, features sculptures and paintings by Italian and Flemish artists and above all the stunning authentic Maumejean stained glass windows which are enough reason to visit the interior of this cathedral.

As we have previously mentioned, its façade has been carved by hand on black lava stone. Its remarkable height is something not to be missed.

Before you leave Arucas go to get the unforgettable memory of the view of San Juan Bautista’ Church from mountain Arucas viewpoint. Among the town’s little houses flowing along the old town of Arucas you’ll see emerging the magnificent Cathedral of Arucas; the main protagonist of this landscape in its own right.

When you come to stay with us at Dunas Hotels & Resorts, we suggest you visit the north of the island, and go to discover charming Arucas and its magnificent Church, San Juan Bautista
