7 Things to do in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is a city that perfectly combines history, culture, nature, and pleasant weather all year round. Whether you’re coming for a few days or planning a longer stay, there’s always something to discover here.
From urban beaches to charming neighbourhoods, delightful foodie spots, and outdoor activities, here are seven must-do experiences in Las Palmas to help you make the most of your visit.
1. Lose yourself in Vegueta and its streets
Wandering through the streets of Vegueta is like travelling five centuries back to the city’s founding by Juan Rejón in 1478.
This beautiful district, with its colonial touches and narrow cobbled streets, is where history and culture intertwine. Here, you’ll find treasures such as Las Palmas Cathedral, the Casa de Colón, Plaza Santa Ana, and the Canarian Museum.
2. Discover the “english side” of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
One of the city’s most important districts, Ciudad Jardín, was designed in the 19th century by English urban planners who saw the area’s potential and built homes in a unique, distinctive style.
Among these buildings, the Hotel Santa Catalina stands out. It is the best example of the English influence in the city and a cultural and architectural landmark of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
3. Stroll through the wildest part of the city: El confital
If there’s one place that sets the city apart, it’s El Confital. This area boasts its own unique character, making it a pleasant spot for a walk or a day at the beach.
Located near Las Canteras Beach, it’s ideal for activities such as hiking, cycling routes, or water sports. Alternatively, you can travel from your family-friendly hotel in San Agustín and relax on its beach, surrounded by volcanic mountains and with panoramic views of the entire city.
4. Admire the City from Its Viewpoints
Without a doubt, one of the best ways to see the city from a different perspective. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has several viewpoints where you can take in part or all of the city.
Notable viewpoints include those at Santa Ana Cathedral, the Bay of El Confital, and the Four Cannons.
5. Discover the Mercado del Puerto
Located next to Las Canteras Beach, this market blends tradition with modernity.
In the morning, you can buy fresh products such as cheeses, tropical fruit, fish, or artisan bread.
At midday and in the afternoon, it transforms into a food hall with stalls offering everything from Canarian cuisine to international options, all accompanied by a lively atmosphere and live music on some days.
6. Visit the Poema del Mar Aquarium
The Poema del Mar Aquarium is one of the most spectacular aquariums in Europe. It features different ecosystems (jungle, reefs, deep ocean) and one of the largest curved screens in the world. Ideal for families or sea lovers, it combines a visual experience with environmental education and marine conservation
7. Visit the Viera y Clavijo Botanical Garden
Known as the Jardín Canario, it’s about 7 km from the centre of Las Palmas. It’s a green paradise of more than 27 hectares, perfect for gentle walks and discovering the native and endemic flora of the Canary Islands. There are signposted routes, picnic areas, and highly photogenic spots. Admission is free.
