Are you coming to visit us in Gran Canaria and stay in one of our hotels in the south of the island? That are great news! If you’d like to take advantage of your visit to learn more about the island, on our Gran Canaria section you’ll find many interesting suggestions to visit beaches, museums and other charming places in Gran Canaria. Today, we’d like to suggest a day trip to a very charming town in the centre of Gran Canaria. It’s called Artenara and it’s right at the top of the island.
Artenara it is known for its numerous caves and impressive views of the summits of the island, Roque Nublo and Roque Bentayga. It, is the highest town of Gran Canaria, at 1,270 meters.
Miguel de Unamuno, one of the greatest Spanish writers, was totally fascinated by Artenara and its natural beauty. "The Petrified Tempest" was the way he described this incredible formation of volcanic rocks, which are shown to tourists as a sculpture designed by nature.
Tradition has managed to remain in this small town in the centre of the island. Until the beginning of the 20th century, most of its population lived in its already famous caves, some of which are opened to visitors. Currently, many are still used as homes, others as restaurants.
This naturally artistic town, has also had the ability to disseminate its crafts through local artists. Thus, and paying homage to the great Unamuno, you may visit the viewpoint named after him. Revelled in the wonderful scene that rises in the highest point of the island of Gran Canaria.
Immerse yourself in the heart of Artenara by visiting its main square, Plaza de San Matías. There, you will not only be able to enjoy some delicious tapas, but you may also enjoy urban tourism. For it, you ought to go to the temple of San Matías, and if you come to Artenara during its local festival, you’ll enjoy many events in the Alameda.
If you go to Artenara, you cannot miss Acusa. Its caves, which we have previously mentioned in other posts, are one of its superb attractions. La Candelaria is another formation of caves, some of them were manmade and are waiting for you to discover the remains of some prehistoric rock paintings.
In the same way, you shouldn’t miss El Hornillo, Fortamaga, Acusa Seca and El Álamo. All of them cave complexes that tell the history of a place that has endured over the years.
Don’t leave Artenara without visiting the Sanctuary of La Cuevita, which pays homage to the patron saint of this traditional town. Admire the viewpoint of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which seems to embrace all its neighbours from above. Very close to this you’ll discover the Mirador de la Cilla, some breathtaking views that will amaze you after accessing to it through one of the caves.
