One of the main reasons for which our guests visit us is the sunshine. A large number of our hosts know that we can enjoy the sun virtually all year round because of our hotels strategic location in the south of the island of Gran Canaria.

In the summertime the average temperature on the island ranges from 26ºC to 28ºC, exceeding sometimes 30ºC, and in the winter temperatures range from 16ºC to 24ºC. For this reason, it is said that in Gran Canaria we can enjoy a perennial spring and summer, especially in the south part of the island. This conditions occurs due to the geographical situation of the Canary Islands in the axis of the subtropical strip, west of the African continent, and the trade winds.

It is known that sunbathing has multiple benefits such as strengthening bones and teeth, lowering blood pressure, balance cholesterol, strengthening the immune system, among others. However, we must not forget that prolonged sun exposure without adequate protection may be harmful and causes premature skin aging, unwanted wrinkles and, in extreme cases, malignant melanomas.

At Dunas Hotels & Resorts we care about our guests’ health, therefore, we’d like to recommend some tips for tanning with prudence and moderation. The first thing to consider before exposing our skin to the sun is that we must prepare for it, so it is advisable to exfoliate your skin with an exfoliating glove or a suitable gel in order to remove dead cells and impurities.

Once we’ve done this, we must apply sunscreen at least 20 minutes before sun exposure and reapply frequently. Nowadays, there are many products that offer various solar factors, however, it is always advisable to start with a high sunscreen factor and gradually lower it, as our skin tans. There are also different formats: cream, oil, sprays, water resistance products, among others; that’s a personal choice. In addition, it is recommended to use specific protection for the face and for the body; and to consider whether our skin is light or dark, as light skin requires greater protection. And to moisturize our skin and keep our tan longer, it is essential to apply an after-sun balm.

An often forgotten part of our body is our hair. Our hair is exposed to chlorine and salty water, apart from the sun’s UV rays. There are also specific products such as sprays, masks and even shampoos. A hat or a cap will help avoiding the direct sun.

Our eyes must also be protected using sun glasses which completely cover our eyelids and protect against ultraviolet radiation. Nowadays, there are plenty of models with a protection index of 99% against UVA and UVB rays. In addition to sun glasses, we can use anti UV parasols which protect 95% of sunlight. We must also bear in mind that it is not advisable to be exposed to the sun between 12:00 p.m. and 04:00 p.m.

Last but not least, we must drink plenty of water to stay well hydrated and eat healthy, especially fruits and vegetables that contain loads of vitamin C and E and beta-carotene, since it neutralizes sun’s free-radicals. Examples of foods that have these characteristics include vegetables such as carrots, spinaches, beets, broccoli; nuts such as almonds, hazelnuts and peanuts; fruits like apricot, melon, papaya, mango, oranges, strawberries, etc.

We hope you have taken good note of these tips so you can make the most of your stay at Dunas Hotels & Resorts.
