Hiking trails in Gran Canaria
Hiking in Gran Canaria, another form of tourism.

The hiking trails are a new reason why every year the Canary Islands welcome millions of tourists. The Dunas Hotel & Resorts team would like to propose to you three essential hiking trails in Gran Canaria.

Years ago, the tourists who came to the island of Gran Canaria focused mainly on the beaches. Nowadays, things have changed and there are plenty of other tourist attractions which have become fashionable. One of these are the large number of hiking trails; with very diverse landscapes from one to the next, and magnificent sceneries you can become part of.

Route Of The Three Dams

It's a nice route which connects the Chira, Soria and Las Niñas dams. A large part of this tour transits the area of the Arguineguín ravine. Slopes, amazing rock formations and lots of flora and fauna such as lizards, pitas or aloes will be your trekking companions2. It is an accessible itinerary if you start from the dam of Chira towards the dam of Soria; doing so, most of the trail goes downhill apart from the very first stretch of the route around Chira's Dam. Nevertheless, if you are up for some adventure hiking this trail, the other way round can be a challenge, since it becomes quite a tough one.

Once you get to the highest point of the route, the breathtaking landscape makes the effort definitely worthwhile. This route is not well marked, but it is very easy to follow the path toward the dams, since you'll be able to see them at all times.

As you walk towards the dam Soria you'll start seeing some villages of the island of Gran Canaria and probably it is the greatest of moments to stop, have a rest and regain strength with some authentically traditional Canarian food in the village of Soria. Once you are well fed and rested you can go on to the next dam: El embalse de las Niñas.

The road is long, but if you love the countryside and are used to hiking trails, it will not leave you indifferent.

Barranco de los Cernícalos Trail

El barranco de los Cernícalos -the kestrel's ravine- is the boundary between the municipalities of Telde and Valsequillo, and is part of the Reserva Natural Especial de Los Marteles. This is one of the few places on the island where fresh water runs all year long.

A good starting point for this hiking route is Los Arenales. Along the riverbed of Barranco de los Cernícalos and just after a short paved road you'll find yourself right in the middle of unspoilt nature.

If you keep walking along the course of water you'll be on the right track. The route is perfectly equipped for trekking. It is a very attractive scenery with numerous cascades and waterfalls all along. The last stretch of the path (about 500 meters), just before reaching the last waterfall, is the most complicated part of the route, but the rewarding sight you'll enjoy once you get there it makes every effort worthwhile.

Route Agaete - Guayedra

It is a simple trail which starts in the town of Agaete next to the local police station. It is a 10kms' hike aprox' along the Camino Real (Royal Way) to Guayedra, which is the road that goes from Agaete to La Aldea de San Nicolás and has a trail road down to the beach of Guayedra.

The landscape is stunning. From there you'll have a perfect view to Puerto de las Nieves. The road is pleasant and the landscape is varied. On your way back you can take the so called path of El Camino de la Degollada del Horno de la Cal which is a direct route to Agaete.
