Holy Week is a key date after Carnival in Gran Canaria, particularly in the island's capital city, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, where this religious week has been celebrated since the city was founded in 1478.
This year, Holy Week will be held from Palm Sunday (13th April 2014) to Easter Sunday (20th April 2014), with the most significant events taking place between Thursday 17th, Maundy Thursday and 20th April.
Holy Week affects the whole island but the congregation processions in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria focus on the Vegueta-Triana area: the Penitence Procession in Vegueta, the 'Santo Encuentro' Procession, the Procession of Our Lady of Sorrows in Triana or the Stations of the Cross carrying an image of Christ on the cross (Santísimo Cristo del Buen Fin), among others.
In addition, special masses are held to celebrate Holy Week in the South of Gran Canaria, for example in the "El Salvador" Ecumenical Centre in Playa del Inglés.
