Carnival is the biggest party of the year in Gran Canaria: the whole island, for a month, more or less, celebrates this fiesta, full of fun and colour. The two hot spots are, without a doubt, the capital city, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and Maspalomas.
The 2014 Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Carnival will be held from 15 February to 8 March across a number of locations in the capital city of Gran Canaria island. This year, the theme is the world of fantasy, and so the island will be full of fairies and goblins for the whole duration of the fiesta.
The key locations of this Carnival will be the Concursos de Murgas [troubadour contests] which are held over several days on the main stage in Santa Catalina Park, the Carnival Queen Gala, to be held on Saturday 28 February, the Carnival Parade in Las Palmas on Saturday 1 March and the Drag Queen Contest Gala, which year after year continues to surprise and entertain the local crowd as well as all the visitors who join in the Carnival.
In the south of the island, Maspalomas International Carnival is becoming more comprehensive with bigger crowds every year. This year it will be held from 7 to 16 March and the theme is Flora and Fauna. In the words of Jose Carlos Alamo, Maspalomas City Councillor in charge of Events and Celebrations, the aim this year is to transform the city into a stage, so that it will look like an impenetrable jungle! so you should set about getting your costumes ready to enjoy the experience.
