From February 1st to March 3rd 2013 Gran Canaria carries its visitors away into another world. The capital Las Palmas, as important Carnival center, daily invites you to enter an unforgettable spectacle under the motto “Masquerade” that is arranged around the Catalina Park from February 1st to 17th 2013.
Also the rest of the island shines by gorgeous colors and sounds, and inspires with its sensational varied program for the young and the young at heart. So does the International Carnival of Maspalomas, which takes place from February 15th till February 24th 2013 under the motto “Planet Maspalomas”, with its processions and colorful parades around the shopping center Yumbo.
The carnival time is traditionally opened by the “Gala de la Reina”, the ceremonial crowning of the carnival queen on February 1st 2013 in Las Palmas. Henceforth the carnival fever moves southward along the coast through Agüimes, Telde, Maspalomas and reaches Mógan on the west side of the island. Let yourself be carried away by the amazing as well as entertaining “Gala of the Drag Queens” wearing their meter high, exquisitely colorful costumes and the competitions of the street musicians groups, and join the great carnival processions in Maspalomas and Las Palmas.
The Carnival of Gran Canaria offers, from carnival for children up to great galas, days full of fun, excitement and fascination. It ends with the “Burial of the Sardine”, a great procession through the streets that completes the carnival time with the burning of the great sardine and, for instance in Las Palmas, spectacular fireworks on the beach of Las Canteras. Whether on land or in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean - the carnival is one of the most impressive and memorable cultural experiences of the year. Especially the inspiring “joie de vivre” of the island dwellers will tempt you like nothing before.
