The Library of the Island of Gran Canaria

The Library of Gran Canaria, called in Spanish Biblioteca Insular de Gran Canaria, is one of the most emblematic buildings of the district of Triana-Vegueta, provides much architectural history and cultural interest to both the city of Las Palmas and the island itself.

The Library of Gran Canaria is located in Las Palmas, in Plaza de Hurtado Mendoza, better known as Plaza de las Ranas. It is a lovely place in the district of Triana-Vegueta, full of terraces where you can enjoy leisure, culture and the good weather that the island offers.

Biblioteca Insular de Gran Canaria

It consists of two separate buildings, each with its particular history. Fernando Navarro is the original building, declared of cultural interest. Its majesty gets many people to visit one of the most significant buildings in the neighbourhood of Triana - Vegueta.

It represents one of the finest examples of architecture from the late nineteenth century and was designed by architect Fernando Navarro. Its eclectic style has had many different uses and went through several reforms along the years. Its first use was as - Círculo Mercantil - a type of private Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Subsequently, it became Banco Hispano Americano, and it went through a new reform to the architect Miguel Martin. Later on, architect Manuel de la Peña started a new one.

In 1986 the Cabildo of Gran Canaria bought this building and commissioned the architect José Luis Gago to a large rehabilitation project. It needed a building capable of lodging the funds of Casa de Colón. It was in 1991, when the new Island's Library was created. In 2001, the Town Council acquired the building known hitherto Casa de Doña Ursula Quintana Llarena (a building designed by the renowned urban planner Manuel Ponce de León, original from the island himself), in order to expand the facilities of La Biblioteca Insular de Gran Canaria. In 2013, the new Library of the Island of Gran Canaria was inaugurated, which connects the two buildings that make up the whole architectural complex.

Once the two buildings were restored and interconnected, the so needed modernization of Library of the Island of Gran Canaria was achieved.
