Agaete and the Branch Festivity

Agaete is a coastal town in the northwest of Gran Canaria, it is known for its landscapes full of contrasts: from the Natural Park of Tamadaba over 1000 mts above sea level to its busy port of Las Nieves, right at the foot of the cliffs that drop down from Tamadaba. Around the harbour you can enjoy the local cuisine which specializes in fresh fish, with typical sailor’s dishes such as the fish broth, the parrot fish and their tasty grilled sardines.

Running parallel to the heights of Tamadaba and guiding us by the ravine we’ll be able to enjoy another beautifully contrasting landscape: the magnificent Valley of Agaete, which stands out for its orange orchards, its tropical fruit trees and even coffee plantations. Interestingly, it is the only corner in Europe where coffee is grown, since the XIXth century. It is a small production, but its taste conquers the most discerning coffee gourmets in Gran Canaria.

Beaches and natural pools in Agaete

Some of Agaete’s highlights are undoubtedly its beaches and natural pools. You can enjoy the most popular and accessible ones such as La Playa del Muelle (the Pier’s Beach) or Playa de Las Nieves (the Beach of the Snows), located on both sides of Puerto de Las Nieves or you could also dare to some wilder ones, like Playa de Guayedra or Sotavento. Agaete’s natural pools are very popular, as the one you can enjoy in Las Salinas.

La Bajada de La Rama Festival in Agaete

The most popular Fiesta in Agaete and undoubtedly one of the most popular ones across the island of Gran Canaria, is the Fiesta de La Rama in honour of La Virgen de las Nieves (Our Lady of the Snows). It was declared National Tourist Interest in 1972 and it is held in early August.

Every year on August 4th people from Agaete go to the upper part of the Villa to get some branches with which they go down dancing along with the cheerful music from the local band to offer the branches to the Virgin in the small chapel of Las Nieves, near the port. The whole way is a prodigious party to which more and more people join in with great joy.
